The Title of Avengers: Endgame Was Planned Before Infinity War Was Released

The endgame has arrived for the Avengers and the fate of the universe is nearing. Following a nearly insurmountable defeat in Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel President Kevin Feige is one of the few people who know how it will all play out. MTV News stopped the exec on the Golden Globes red carpet last night to ask about the recently released title of the next film.

“It was in place before we started developing the movie. Or just as we were developing it, yes. So, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) says that line because we knew it was in the title,” Feige revealed. The line he’s referring to is when Doctor Strange tells Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), “We’re in the endgame now,” following a major defeat in Infinity War.

The pervading theory of the hour suggests that Doctor Strange knows the secret to defeating Thanos. In losing the battle, he seems confident the Avengers will win the war. If so, it would be fitting to give him the sentient line that tees up the next chapter.

As the cliffhangers grow and the stakes escalate, Marvel is clamping down on an already tight spoiler avoidance strategy. Endgame directors, The Russo Brothers, tweeted out a cryptic photo on set enticing fans to “Look hard…” back in September. Even though it was generally perceived that hidden images spelled out the title, Endgame wasn’t confirmed until the first trailer was released last month.

If the cloak of mystery around Avengers: Endgame has you frustrated, well, get used to it. Until the movie hits theaters, we may not be getting many more clues. With some major characters wiped out in Infinity War, Marvel is playing coy about which actors will return.

To avoid spoilers, Feige confirmed we won’t see much of the film before it is released. MTV asked if trailers would stick to the first 15-20 minutes of the movie. “I would call it somewhat accurate,” Feige replied. “As was the case with a lot of our films, this one in particular. Being able to generate excitement without giving away any of the many many many secrets would be ideal. I think this marketing team is the best in the world and will be able to pull it off.”
